Revolutionizing Warfare through Interdiction

چکیده
THE JOINT surveillance and target attack radar system (JSTARS) promises to revolutionize how US forces conduct conventional warfare. Before the development of JSTARS, US forces de pended on close operations to defeat an enemy army. Because airpower’s ability to destroy an enemy’s mo bile ground forces was severely limited, especially during darkness and bad weather, interdiction proved important to close operations—but in a supporting role—primarily by delaying and disrupting enemy maneuver and resupply. 1 Now, however, JSTARS and developments in precision guided munitions (PGM) will permit a commander to use interdiction to quickly destroy large numbers of an enemy army’s vehicles, even during darkness and bad weather. Interdiction’s vastly increased destructiveness against mobile forces will revolutionize the conduct of warfare by giving LT COL PRICE T. BINGHAM, USAF , RETIRED

Modern land commanders are increasingly dependent on information-age systems comprising communications and information systems, networks and sensors. While these systems have the potential to produce significant changes in the conduct and character of war, their reliance on the electromagnetic spectrum also has the potential to increase their vulnerability to interdiction by electronic-warfare ...
متن کاملBlind Network Interdiction Strategies - A Learning Approach
Network interdiction refers to disrupting a network in an attempt to either analyze the network’s vulnerabilities or to undermine a network’s communication capabilities. A vast majority of the works that have studied network interdiction assume a priori knowledge of the network topology. However, such knowledge may not be available in real-time settings. For instance, in practical electronic wa...
متن کاملOptimal Interdiction of Unreactive Markovian Evaders
The interdiction problem arises in a variety of areas including military logistics, infectious disease control, and counter-terrorism. In the typical formulation of network interdiction, the task of the interdictor is to find a set of edges in a weighted network such that the removal of those edges would maximally increase the cost to an evader of traveling on a path through the network. Our wo...
متن کاملA Note on the Integrality Gap in the Nodal Interdiction Problem
In the maximum flow network interdiction problem, an attacker attempts to minimize the maximum flow by interdicting flow on the arcs of network. In this paper, our focus is on the nodal interdiction for network instead of the arc interdiction. Two path inequalities for the node-only interdiction problem are represented. It has been proved that the integrality gap of relaxation of the maximum fl...
متن کاملNetwork interdiction – models, applications, unexplored directions
Network interdiction is the monitoring or halting of an adversary’s activity on a network. Its models involve two players, usually called the interdictor and the evader (or, in the more general context of Stackelberg games, leader and follower). The evader operates on the network to optimize some objective such as moving through the network as fast as possible (shortest path interdiction), or w...
